‘em’ is a markup instruction also known as tag and is used in markup language. It is a semantic markup as it describes the purpose intended. The purpose and meaning of the text included by em means it is an emphasized phrase. It is a shortened code word for ephemeral which means anything which is short lived or transitory just like href is for hyperlink reference, px is for pixel, src is for source etc. em refers to the size of text in programming language and is equivalent to the width of a letter m relative to the size of the text in parent element like if font size if 10 pt, 1 em is equivalent to 10 pt, 2 em is equivalent to 20 pt, .5 em is equivalent to 5 pt and so on. 1 em is roughly taken as 16 px.
